A MAN was stopped speeding in Richmond and when questioned by police was found to be drunk.

The man, Lee Bushell of Grange Road, Hampton, had been travelling along Paradise Road, Richmond, when he was noticed by police officers exceeding the 30mph speed limit.

He was signalled to stop and when questioned was unsteady on his feet. A road-side test was administered which he failed.

Bushell, 26, was taken to Richmond Police Station, where a further breath test gave a lowest reading of 60 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit is 35 micrograms.

Appearing in the dock, Bushell, who was not represented, told the court that he regretted driving.

He said: "I didn’t intend to drink but had no way to get home. I understand that this is no excuse, but I had a big meal and thought I wouldn’t be over the limit."

Bushell was disqualified from driving for 18 months and fined £250. He will also pay £55 court costs.
