Sir – Jerry Shadbolt (RTT, October 3) argues at length in support of Boris Johnson’s plan for an estuary airport, without mention of the greatest problem of all: the contribution to climate change.
No doubt talk of closing Heathrow would be a vote winner but a six-runway 24 hour airport will contribute far more to carbon emissions, and makes the plan a non-starter.
On top of that, the manufacture of the concrete generates an often forgotten enormous quantity of carbon dioxide.
The answer to our voracious appetite for carbon intensive activity can only be rationing, a policy adopted by the Green Party several years ago.
Residents will have a chance to express their view on this at the general election, and I’m pleased to announce that the we will be contesting both Richmond Park and, following the recent selection of Steve Roest, Twickenham.
