Sir – I am writing to clarify some points made by Mr Thomas in his letter “Will Lib Dem shift on car policy affect CPZ?” (RTT, September 26).
Nick Clegg is right, people want petrol in their cars. What we want to do is see how that can best be done sustainably.
Cars are not out of favour in this borough – what we have simply done is change the charging structure, which is not a tax, within CPZs – this is revenue neutral as there are no 'extra charges'.
Those with least CO2 emissions pay little or nothing, while those with more emissions pay more.
Car ownership does change over time – one only has to look at unleaded petrol to see that.
