Work to make a deadly stretch of road in west Twickenham safer was completed late last month, to the delight of borough representatives.

Councillors and Twickenham MP Vincent Cable have been campaigning for safety work to be carried out in Staines Road, between Hospital Bridge Road and the A316, where there have been two fatalities in the last three years.

Last month a scheme to install a mini-roundabout and traffic islands on the stretch of road, put in a shared cycle/pedestrian path on the south side of the road and narrow the carriageway was completed and pressure is still being applied for a zebra crossing by the junction of Court Close Avenue, which many residents have asked for.

Councillor Munira Wilson, who represents West Twickenham on Richmond Council, said she and her colleagues were delighted to deliver the improvements.

“Many residents in the Rivermeads estate and on Staines Road have already told us how much the scheme has improved the traffic, slowing down cars and making it easier to turn out of the estate,” she said.

“The traffic islands provide easier crossing points for pedestrians, and cyclists feel much safer on the shared footpath.”

Coun David Trigg, Richmond Council cabinet member for traffic, transport and parking said if the traffic islands are being used by residents it would help the council in its bid for funding for a new zebra crossing.
