A VIRTUOSO performance from new-recruit Darren Sammy helped Barnes to their first Premiership victory in what was a stunning all-round team display, as last year's Division Two champions were brushed aside.

Barnes were put into bat after losing the toss and within three balls lost Iain Collin. But Chaston and Olly Slipper eased the score onto 55 before Sammy joined Slipper for the crucial partnership.

At lunch, Barnes had got to a healthy 135-3, and after the break Sammy opened up, showing his full repertoire of strokes to unsettle Southgate's attack. He struck 83 from just 72 balls.

James Drake-Brockman plundered a late 47 but wickets fell and Barnes were bowled out for 272.

In reply, Barnes almost got off to the perfect start when Southgate's opener was dropped off the first ball.

But Barnespressure was immense and at 20-2 the visitors were precariously placed.

Southgate launched a mini recovery to take the score into the sixties before Sammy's pace and the left arm spin of Will Fowlston ripped through the middle order. Justin Brown and Mark Price chipped in with the other wickets.

Fowlston flight and variation continually wrong- footed Southgate and he ended up with 4-28 off 11 overs.

Barnes 272 (Sammy 83, Slipper 54) beat Southgate 143 (Fowlston 4-28, Sammy 4-33).

Barnes travel to Eastcote on Saturday followed by a trip to Basingstoke for the first round of the Evening Standard Challenge Trophy.
