Last Saturday, on 20/04/2024, league 2 teams Sutton United and Crawley Town faced off, one fighting against relegation and the other shooting for a spot at promotion - ultimately producing a result that benefited neither.

The 97 minute match concluded with a 2-2 draw. After Crawley took an early lead at the end of the first half thanks to Liam Kelly the current 7th place team seemed destined for an easy win. However, in the second half Sutton came alive and fought back, with Charlie Lakin scoring a deflection which dropped into the back of the net, keeping Sutton’s hopes alive.

Only 11 minutes before full time, Sutton managed to pull ahead after a poorly controlled pass from Crawley allowed a ball to be played into Sanderson who slotted it into the net - sparking celebration for Sutton’s fans after a disappointing first half.

But Crawley were not going to give up. As the game entered stoppage time Crawley player Lolos fired a shot from the edge of the penalty box which deflected off of a fallen Sutton player, bouncing into the goal. Sutton’s hopes were nearly crushed further as Crawley scored another in the last minute of extra time which was disallowed for offside.

The controversial ending to the game led to a brief confrontation between teams on the pitch after the game. Sutton’s survival chances had been wrecked and Crawley’s shot at promotion was seeming ever further. Sutton United currently sits at 41 points, 2 ahead of the lowest team in the league and 3 below the 22nd team, the next team up from them. After this disappointing result, Sutton will be hoping for a win in their next game, and for 22nd team Colchester to lose the next two - giving them a slim chance at avoiding relegation...
