Alan Keen, one half of a husband and wife MP team nicknamed Mr and Mrs Expenses, has voted against reforming members' second homes allowances.

Mr Keen, Labour MP for Feltham and Heston, voted to keep generous expenses for kitting out members' second homes on Thursday night.

His wife, Ann Keen, who represents Isleworth, Feltham and Heston, for Labour, skipped the controversial vote.

Part of Thursday's debate concerned reforms to "The John Lewis list" - an unofficial guide used to decide whether an MP's expenditure claim is reasonable in relation to claims for their second homes.

The list is linked to prices at the department store and allows MP's to claim up to £24,006 to cover the costs of running a second home including £299.99 for an air conditioning unit, £300 on a freestanding mirror and £10,000 for a new kitchen.

Mr and Mrs Keen drew criticism after it was revealed the pair used more than £100,000 in public funds to pay for a flat with a swimming pool and a 24-hour concierge on London's South Bank.

The Keens paid for the purchase of the £500,000 flat six years ago with a mortgage on the property, plus a loan on their family home in Brentford, which is only nine miles from Westminster.

Thursday's vote followed a five-month probe led by Speaker Michael Martin into MP's pay and expenses following a series of controversies.

The proposed reforms - defeated by a majority of 28 - would have capped second home allowances at £19,600 a year to cover accommodation, with a £30 daily subsistence rate.

Earlier MPs voted to peg their pay rise back to 2.25 per cent.

South-west London MP's who voted to keep the John Lewis list:

  • Tessa Jowell, Labour MP for Dulwich and West Norwood
  • Alan Keen, Labour MP for Feltham and Heston
  • Siobhain McDonagh, Labour MP for Mitcham and Morden
  • David Wilshire, Conservative MP for Spelthorne

Perhaps the most interesting fact not to receive much comment in the media was the fact that over half of our MP’s , 330 out of a total of 646, failed to vote.
On a issue which the general public regards as an important test of their integrity 330 MP’s failed to declare their position. Not an action, or rather inaction, of which they can be at all proud.
Other facts are:-
Only 316 MP’s did vote.
172 voted against the new proposals.
144 voted for the new proposals.
A majority of only 28 against the new proposals.
146 Labour MP’s voted against the new proposals.
21 Conservative MP’s voted against the new proposals.
5 other party MP’s voted against the new proposals.

This is all rather worrying - Alan Keen voted, but his wife didn't.In fact since the Keens went into hiding recently, nothing has been seen or heard of Ann Keen.He hasn't done her in, has he ?

I doubt if he has bumped her off, Chris. If he had, he would have already made a life insurance claim.

Human Wastage

Most papers etc have commented on the MPs corrupt behaviour concerning pay scales and 2nd home allowances but what is being done to stop them? Why don't the paper's print a one-page petition that gives the masses a chance to make their voices heard?

Since I came back to Bolton I have witnessed dire poverty. The government is fudging the figures on unemployment in the region and handing out tax credits to those who are on low incomes. It is making a mockery of those who are on full pay and receiving no handouts.

I say give the MPs no further pay increases.

Do away with the 2nd home allowances.

Up the minimum hourly pay for the average worker, so that tax credits are no longer required.

Stop moving people from the dole to New Deal, from New Deal to organisations where people are temporarily taken off the dole and placed in companies for no pay so as to disguise the unemployment figures.

All the government is doing is scavenging on the existing taxpayer and conning the British people!!!!
