Deaf urged to use services as sign language course begins

The council has used a week highlighting the problems of deaf residents to promote an introductory sign language course and services available for people who cannot hear perfectly.

Deaf Awareness Week ends on Sunday, May 11, and Richmond Council and Richmond Adult Community College (RACC) are urging residents to take advantage of the services available for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

They have promoted a five-week introductory sign language course, starting on June 11, and a nationally accredited qualification giving an insight into the day-to-day experiences of deaf people. The certificate in awareness and communication begins on June 5.

Both courses are being held at RACC's Richmond campus, Parkshot.

Deaf and deaf-blind residents are also encouraged to take advantage of the council's resource room in the Sheen Lane Centre, in East Sheen, where they can try out equipment.

Councillor Denise Carr, Richmond Council's cabinet member for adult services, health and housing, said: "I urge all residents to take advantage of the opportunities and advice."
