Hundreds of people took part in the 10th annual Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan (procession) in Hounslow on Sunday to mark a uniqe event in Sikh history.

In 1699 AD the first initiation (baptism) of Skihs took place which led to their distinct look with the wearing of Panj Kakkar's 5k's: kesh (uncut hair), kanga (wooden comb) kachera special breeches, kitpan (sword) and kachera (iron bracelet).

In 1699 in response to a call from Guru Gobind Rai, the 10th Sikh guru, Sikhs gathered at Anandpuir to celebrate the New Year (Vaisakhi) and five men responded and took part in the first initiation. They became the first members of the Brotherhood of Khalsa.

Sunday's ceremony organised by the Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Alice Way, Hounslow, assisted by members of the Gurdwara Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha in Martindale Road, Hounslow, began from Alice Road with ceremonies inside and outside the gurdawara.

After the ceremonies the procession, complete with floats made its way to MartIndale Road. Colourful saris and traditional Sikh dress were out in force and many people gave out free refreshments along the route to those taking part.

Roads were closed and traffic diverted to let the procession take place.
