Cranford is set to become one of Europe's noisiest communities if Government plans for expansion at Heathrow go ahead, borough politicians have warned.

Even if ministers bow to public pressure and abandon their wishes to build a third runway, replacing runway alternation with a "mixed mode" use of the two existing runways would allow more planes than ever to fly over the village of Cranford.

Scrapping the Cranford Agreement, which dates back to 1952 and bans take-offs over the village situated at the eastern end of Heathrow's northern runway, would have a devastating impact on its residents, say councillors.

Twelve councillors from Heston and Cranford have joined forces to condemn the plans to introduce mixed mode.

Heston and Cranford Area Committee chairman, Coun Mohinder Gill, has written a letter to the Secretary of State for Transport Ruth Kelly, to tell her "in no uncertain terms" that the community is strongly against ending the Cranford Agreement.

He said: "Cranford is already one of the noisiest places to live in the UK and scrapping the agreement will make it one of Europe's noisiest communities."
