A scheme that saw a fourfold increase in the number of children cycling to school is one of two projects to scoop prestigious awards for the council.

Hounslow was judged "most improved transport borough" and won the prize in the "cycle improvements category" at the London Transport Awards.

The awards, which celebrate excellence in London's transport industry, were presented by Jeremy Vine at the London Hilton, Park Lane Hotel. Hounslow was the only borough to win two awards.

The "most improved transport" prize was awarded in recognition of improvements to bus priority, cycle facilities and training, school travel planning, walking and the public realm.

The award for cycling improvements recognised the borough's commitment to promoting cycling with its "try cycling to school" and "Cyclicious" schemes, which saw a 400 per cent increase in cycling to the schools that participated in the programme.
