Strand-on-the-Green Infant and Junior schools joined together in their support of greener modes of transport this month, holding their second Scoot to School day.
The day was planned to remind children how healthy and enjoyable scootering is, but also focused on the safety aspects of travelling to school in this way. Children were invited to bring their scooters into school and store them in a special scooter park during the day. Later, children had the chance to pass a scooter proficiency test, and were given a talk by a police community safety officer about road safety.
The day formed a part of a larger school initiative called the School Travel Plan, which aims to reduce the number of pupils travelling to and from school by car, and persuade families to choose more enviromentally-friendly ways to travel. The scheme was started earlier this year, largely due to problems with traffic and parking in the area, as well as the wider fears of global warming and safety.
A survey conducted in March noted that the most popular method of transport with the children was scootering, and a scooter pool was started for students without scooters. The initiative has been a huge success, with as many as one in four Strand-on-the-Green children currently arriving at school by scooter.
