Each year, for the last 10 years, Rotarians from the Rotary Club and the day time Rotary Club of Twickenham have gone to Heathfield Junior School to teach pupils the finer arts of chess.

At the end of each year there is an internal competition which is open to all pupils to compete for the Heathfield Chess Cup.

This year a bumper 63 pupils participated with Rotarians on hand as invigilators. The success of this school club is owed to Mrs Simi Pathal, a teacher at this school, who has championed chess to develop the potential of their pupils.

The standard of pupils was very high and successive heats narrowed the final match down to two pupils. This year’s winner was Mikail Acar (from year 5) who narrowly beat Gurbir Nagpal (from year 4) into second place after a memorable well fought match.

The award this year was given by Rotary club President Ian Cave at a school assembly.

Mikail received a Certificate from the Rotary Club of Twickenham Upon Thames to recognize his achievement and his name, plus year of winning, was engraved on the Heathfield Chess Cup.

The Rotary Club of Twickenham meets every Tuesday evening at the Strawberry Hill Golf Club. For more information visit www.tutrotary.org.
