The Royal Military School of Music at Kneller Hall in Whitton is seeking music and history-loving, volunteers to help deliver an ambitious project which will chronicle 160 years of military music tradition at the Grade II listed institution.

Supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, veterans’ charity the Legasee Educational Trust is currently exploring the illustrious history of The Royal Military School at Kneller Hall and examining the importance of music to the military effort.

The project will feature accounts of 40 veterans and military personnel who trained or worked at the school and recordings of the numerous bugle calls that have been used for vital military communication over hundreds of years.

The project is now looking for volunteers from Richmond with an enthusiasm for history and music to help with a range of creative activities at the prestigious school including research, tour guiding, creative writing and social media. Training will be provided where appropriate.

School children are already helping with educational lesson plans, which will sit alongside the filmed resources on the Legasee Educational Trust website for future generations to learn from, and the activity will culminate in a spectacular public concert to be held at Kneller Hall in Summer 2019.

Esther Mann, Curator, Museum of Army Music said: “The Royal Military School of Music is very proud of its historic links to the London Borough of Richmond and we would be delighted to hear from local volunteers who can help us deliver this ambitious project, which the whole community can embrace and enjoy.”
