About 30 budding cricket stars joined England cricketer Monty Panesar for a series of matches during a sports community in Asda Hounslow last Friday.

The left arm spinner took part in the urban cricket games and provided tips to the children from Brentford Outreach Programme in the store's car park.

Top sports nutrionists were on hand to provide advice during the special event.

The event was organised by Asda in conjunction Brentford Community Sports Trust with the support of Hounslow Council and the Police.

It formed part of Asda's commitment to promote sport and healthy eating among young people in the borough.

Proceedings kicked off at 10am with a Bhangra drummer who entertained the crowds. A special ethnic food range was launched and is expected to go on sale in the store at a later date.

Monty said: "I think the community day is a great idea and hopefully will lead to more youngsters getting involved in cricket, which is very important for the game at grass roots level".

The 25 year-old who plays county cricket for Northamptonshire and ODI for England, made his debut with Hounslow Indians at the age of 11.

He advised: "The three most important characteristics for any aspiring cricketer is enjoying the game, playing with passion and learning how to deal with winning and losing games".

Hounslow school boy Yousuf Abacar, 12, said: "I think the community day is fun as I was getting bored during the summer holidays.

"It's not everyday, you get to play cricket with an English cricketer in ASDA car park."
