The White Peaks Cafe as we know it could be no more.

A planning application has been submitted to Richmond Council to demolish the Botanic Gardens cafe as it has "expired its intended lifespan."

In its place would be more "contemporary" shop to accommodate the anticipated children's garden rejuvenation which developers hope will bring n a large number of visitors.

"The current White Peaks Cafe is now in a materially dilapidated state which is impacting on the heritage landscape and presenting a poor view to visitors to Kew," a document attached to the application said.

"Whilst popular when open, it nevertheless fails to communicate Kew’s mission, vision or values in its appearance, facilities, functionality and catering offer."

Initially the current cafe was only expected to have a ten year life span, a time-frame that has now expired.

"Planning permission has been granted for the creation of a high quality nature based experience for families and groups with younger children," the document said.

"There will be facilities for use by school parties and education groups.

"There will be spaces for informal play and group activities. There will be consideration for larger school groups to access the play facilities, lunch areas and to create a separation between visiting adults to the children’s play area."
