Richmond has a new cycling and walking champion, as the borough continue their push for sustainable transport.

Cllr Gareth Richards will be responsible for promoting the interests of cycling in all aspects of the council’s work.

Cllr Richards said: “Getting more people cycling and walking is not only beneficial to the environment and air quality but makes a huge difference to health and well being.

“As a cyclist I know how important it is to have the facilities available to make cycling and walking around the borough easier safer. I am committed to being a strong voice for this community over the next four years.”

Cllr Alexander Ehmann, cabinet member for transport, streetscene and air quality said: “We want to ensure the borough’s environment and infrastructure is geared towards making sustainable travel safe and easy. Cllr Richards will be an important voice in this administration, championing cycling and walking in the borough.”

Cllr Richards' new role will involving promoting environmentally sustainable travel, including making cycling easier and safer as well as helping bring forward essential infrastructure, promotion and training.

Cllr Richards is in his first term at Ham, Petersham and Richmond Riverside Ward.
