Richmond Green has been blighted with litter during the recent warm weather.

Michael Jay, who took these photographs on May 15, said he lives in Hampton and frequents The Green fairly often, but has never seen it look so bad.

He said: "It's supposed to be one of the nicest areas in London and it was absolutely disgusting.

"Every single bin was full to overflowing the rubbish was all over the ground and around the bins and the grass.

"I haven't seen such a state ever since we had the dustman rubbish strike about 30 years ago."

The Council said the public should not litter just because the bins are overflowing.

Councillor Martin Elengorn, cabinet member designate for environment, planning and sustainability said:

“Rubbish from bins in our parks and open spaces is collected at least three times a day by our waste collection team. The teams also have to pick up the litter which people have left in the open space.

“As people will appreciate these are large spaces and it takes time to get around to each bin. With the popularity and high use of these spaces the time lapse between emptying a bin and people using it again can give the false perception the bins are not being emptied. We ask that residents be mindful of this when disposing of their waste.

“If a bin is full you should either wait for the bin to be emptied, find another bin or else take rubbish away with you to help keep our open spaces tidy."
