The Cabbage Pub in Twickenham is headed to Parliament this month in recognition of its fund-raising efforts.

The pub, in London Road, has raised the bar in The All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group’s ‘Charity Fundraising Pub of the Year’ award, as one of eight pubs shortlisted nationally.

The winner will be announced at a reception in the House of Commons on Tuesday April 17.

Manager Stuart Green said: “I feel very excited and very proud. I have been at the pub for over 20 years and we have always tried to be very community focused.

“It’s not always about raising money, sometimes it about providing time, space, and support for different members of the community.

The pub works closely with Richmond Homes & Lifestyle Trust, a supported living service for adults with learning disabilities, and gives them a space to do karaoke and other fun activities on Mondays.

It also provides work experience opportunities for students at special needs school Clarendon School in Hampton, training pupils in the kitchen and at front of house.

At the end of their two-week work experience, the goal is for them to cook a meal for their families in the pub, such as lasagne, bolognaise, or even a jacket potato.

Another charity it works with is the Lewis Moody Foundation, founded by England Rugby hero Lewis Moody MBE, which supports children with brain tumours.

Mike Wood, chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group, said: “UK pubs raise over £100 million for charity every year and the quality of these entries demonstrates just why.

“This highlights once again why pubs are the heart of communities the length and breadth of the country.”

The pub’s biggest and most famous fundraiser is The Cabbage Patch 10 Mile Run – almost as old as the London Marathon – founded in 1982 by ex-landlord and runner Frank Dupree and sponsored by Fullers.

Olympian Mo Farrah won the race in 2005 and was bestowed with the ceremonial cabbage for his efforts.

Yesterday The Cabbage Patch announced on Facebook that tickets for 2018’s race were selling out, so if you want to take part be quick!
