A consultation will be held on a 20-year-old community parking zone in Twickenham before the summer, according to the council.

It was announced at the full council meeting on January 23 following feedback from residents.

Many in the community have expressed a desire to remove parking from the Embankment, which the council said is “not in the scope” of the proposed Twickenham Riverside development.

A petition calling on Richmond Council to remove the parking beside the river has received nearly 2,500 signatures.

The CPZ in Twickenham, which provides priority parking spaces for residents, visitors and businesses, is the oldest in the borough.

A review of the zone has identified spaces that could be added, allowing the possibility of reducing parking along the river.

Cllr Pamela Fleming, cabinet member for environment, business and community, said: “Access to the riverside is important.

“The Embankment forms an important part of the circulatory system in Twickenham and supports the local economy.

“It is crucial for residents and businesses, and attracts large numbers of visitors, particularly in the summer months.

“We have however recognised the desire to remove some parking from the Embankment in order to create more open space towards the river and looked at whether it is possible to create additional parking spaces elsewhere to enable this.

“We believe we can.

“And, following further work, a consultation on the proposals will be held before the summer.”
