But the plans have long been met with opposition so we decided it would be a good time to take a walk around the borough and find out exactly what residents think about the proposals.
Here’s what residents told our reporter Toby Poole.
Marie Young
Marie Young, 38, from Richmond said: “I've been living in Richmond for six years and the noise pollution keeps me up almost every night.
“I'm also worried about how the Heathrow expansion will affect my children's future.
“Very concerned.”
Ernesto Hernandez
Ernesto Hernandez, 38, from Mortlake, said: “It is such a waste investing even more money in London when there are other major cities desperately needing development.
“If they were to put their money into somewhere like Bristol, which badly needs investment in infrastructure, it would be money well spent.”
Katy Cundall
Katy Cundall, 37, from Kew said: “I have mixed feelings on this.
“As a mother I am instinctively opposed to anything that will increase pollution in the local area.
“However, greater expansion will provide further opportunities to contribute to the prosperity of the capital- which can only be a good thing.”
Valerie Smale
Valerie Smale, 63, from Richmond, said: “I’ve lived in this area nearly all my adult life, so I hardly notice the planes anymore.
“The expansion of Heathrow Airport will offer me and my family more opportunities to travel and explore the world, so I'm tentatively in favour of it.”
