Teddington has been cut from plans for new quieter cycling routes in the borough, according to the latest proposals.

The quietways are primarily aimed at new cyclists, and those who would prefer to cycle on quieter routes at a gentler pace.

The revised proposals are in response to feedback from the public in 2016 and are being consulted on this week, with funding from Transport for London (TfL).

The route comes from the Wandsworth Borough, through Richmond Park and via Ham Gate towards Teddington Lock footbridge.

According to the council, cutting Teddington High Street was “disappointing”, but was down to comments received from the public in the previous consultation.

When asked if the proposed route between Ham and Teddington would mean they were more likely to cycle in this area, 64 per cent of the 389 respondents said ‘no’.

The proposals, which include resurfacing and widening Ham Gate Avenue, Martingales Close, Ham Common and Lock Road, will be published for public consultation on February 7 from 3 to 8pm at Ham Library.

Councillor Peter Buckwell, Richmond Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We know that more and more people are turning to cycling for an affordable and healthy way of getting around the Borough.

“We are always looking for viable ways to support those on two wheels.

“This proposed quietway will open up more options for new and infrequent cyclists to take to the streets using less busy roads and some of the most beautiful parts of our Borough. This will encourage greater numbers to visit on foot and by bike.

“We are disappointed that we can’t continue the quietway through Teddington.

“However, we will work with the community and TfL to review what improvements might be possible for Teddington in the next two years.”

Cllr Jean Loveland, Richmond Council cycling champion, added: “We are determined to make the borough a safer place to cycle, walk and drive and to improve air quality.

“To do this we need to remove the barriers that prevent people from cycling safely.

“This quietway would do that while providing for those who prefer to ride at a more leisurely pace.”
