Richmond Council has refused to bring in 20mph speed limits to two roads in Ham while an online petition created by residents is ongoing.

Riverside Drive and Petersham Road were both assessed in detail using traffic surveys and collision assessments, however the council found on each occasion that neither road met the criteria.

Andrée Frieze, a campaigner for Richmond & Twickenham Green Party, said: “While we welcome the council’s support of road safety charity Brake’s #SpeedDown campaign, words alone won’t bring about change. The council must take action, especially when residents demand it.”

A spokesman from Richmond Council said: “The Council has received two requests for 20mph zones in Ham in the last year, one for Riverside Drive and one for Petersham Road.

“However, we are aware of a live online petition requesting a Ham wide 20mph which runs until Feb 2018.

“Riverside Drive and Petersham Road were both assessed against the current council policy for 20mph and officers considered both in detail with traffic surveys and collision assessments undertaken. Neither road met the criteria for a 20mph speed limit at this time.”
