The Treehouse pub in Barnes is the only place in the borough with the worst possible food hygiene score (zero) but there are other eateries in Richmond with ratings of one where ‘major improvement is required’.

In total, there are 26 food outlets that inspectors have given a score of just one; browse through the gallery above to view all the businesses with zero or one star ratings.

Restaurants, takeaways, shops and even butchers and bakeries are among the businesses and organisations to have been rated poorly for their hygiene in places such as Richmond, Barnes, Mortlake, Kew, East Sheen and Teddington.

The ratings have been given to businesses to reflect the standards of food hygiene found when they were inspected by food safety officers from Richmond Council over the past twelve months.

These details have all been published on the government’s Food Standards Agency website.

All the businesses featured in this article were inspected within the past year and were accurate as of November 6 2017, according to the Food Standards Agency website.

As all the details are correct, we will not remove anything. However, we will update this page with any responses from the business owners explaining why they got a low score and what they’ve done to fix the problems.

If you are the owner or manager of one of the food outlets, you can submit your comments to sophie.jones@newsquest.co.uk.

Inspectors check the following three elements:

1. How hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored

2. The condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities

3. How the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe and so that the officer can be confident standards will be maintained in the future
