Roadworks in Bexleyheath are not just impacting on drivers it seems, as pupils at one primary school are finding themselves unable to use their main entrance.
However, Year 6 children at Gravel Hill Primary School have been sharing potentially lifesaving information with younger students to say safe during the busy time.
Through a charity Green Footsteps's walk to school scheme, older students have been teaching their younger schoolmates road safety.
Sue Carlton, who is in charge of eco-friendly travel at Gravel Hill, said: "We’re at a busy junction on the corner of two main roads with two big secondary schools either side, and the roadworks are taking up the pavement alongside the entrance so it is a bit tricky.”
We have six junior road safety officers who are charged with trying to keep everyone safe, and they have been inspirational.
“They have done assemblies and are going to talk to Years 5 and 6.
“We have the yellow jackets which the children wear when they’re walking, and the Year 3s do pedestrian training - when staff take them out and demonstrate how to cross the road safely. Those who can show they’ve understood get a certificate.”
Green Footsteps runs across the south east to encourage children to walk to school.
