New government figures show the progress made by secondary school pupils in Richmond.

This ‘Progress 8’ score reflects the difference between the results SATs taken in year nine and results from GCSEs and other key stage four qualifications.

It takes into account up to eight qualifications, with greater weight placed on English and maths results because of their importance.

The top-scoring school in the area was Waldegrave School, which achieved 0.8.

Waldegrave School headteacher Philippa Nunn said: "We are extremely pleased with our Progress 8 score. We share this success with the entire school community of staff, students and families.

"It should be noted that Progress 8 is a complicated measure which does not always truly reflect the culture and success of a school.

"It is my view that many schools are at an immediate disadvantage.

"There will be issues facing their students that are beyond the control of the school which will have an impact on their score.

"Equally, schools may achieve excellent results across a number of subjects but if that combination does not fit the government formula for measuring progress it will have an effect."
