New signage that will help visitors of Barnes to explore the area has taken one step closer.

The Barnes Community Association (BCA) has been awarded £4,500 as part of Richmond Council’s Civic Pride Scheme.

Funding for the initiative will go towards the production of five signs that will help people to navigate the area.

Part of the BCA’s wider Escape to Barnes programme, the signage scheme aims at bringing new people to it.

Subject to further permissions for installation, the signs would also be designed by a local artist.

They will include an illustrated map of Barnes with key locations of interest highlighted – including the Wetlands Centre, local churches, Olympic Studios, schools and shopping parades.

The council’s Civic Pride Fund is available to individuals or groups who wish to organise a project or event that improves their local area.

It is also available for those who want to deliver more for their local communities.

Grants of up to £5,000 are available to organisations and £1,000 for individuals.

Councillor Pamela Fleming, cabinet member for the environment, said: “This is a great community led proposal. I know that through the Barnes Ponder and local village planning that residents want better community branding of the area – particularly enticing visitors.

“Thousands of people visit the larger attractions like the Wetlands Centre every year and the Olympic Cinema is another popular venue.

“This new signage will encourage visitors to investigate other parts of the local area as well.
