A pre-season friendly between Brentford and Premier League side Southampton has raised over £23,000 for victims of the Grenfell Tower fire.

The fixture was played last Saturday (July 22) at Griffin Park after an agreement between the two clubs that profits from ticket sales would be donated to fund those affected by the tragedy.

An attendance of 4,825 was recorded as the Bees drew 2-2 with the Saints, including 1,500 tickets sold to travelling Southampton fans.

This means that £20,000 was raised in profit from ticket sales for the fund which were raised from several sources.

Fans and partners also donated in support, which is still being calculated due to final costs being confirmed, in a total that will exceed £23,000.

Brentford supporters standing outside the stadium with buckets collected more than £700, while club partner Utilita donated £1,000.

The Bees’ official programme supplier, Curtis Sport, donated £1 from every issue sold directly to the fund, of which 708 were purchased by spectators.

In addition to a £200 donation made by Novotel, in Brentford, the club’s ticketing website, Advanced, waived their fees from the first 500 online transactions for the match to enable greater profits.

Bees 50/50 also played its part.

The club’s half-time draw on the day, in association with Brentford Community Sports Trust, donated the share it would have received - £500 – to the Grenfell Tower effort.

Residents from the tower and surrounding areas were invited to the match as well as members of the emergency services that helped.

Around 400 tickets were taken by police officers, firefighters, ambulance crew and doctors along with their family and friends for the fixture.

A donation from Carlsberg and Fullers enabled them to have free drinks.

Mark Devlin, Brentford’s chief executive, said: “The club was pleased to be able to play a small part in raising funds and providing some respite for both those directly affected by the disaster and our magnificent emergency services.

“The response from fans both in their attendance and in the further donations on matchday was overwhelming and they helped us to raise more than £20,000 in profits from ticket sales and bucket collections.

“I would also like to thank our club partners – Utilita, Novotel [Brentford], Advanced and Curtis Sport for their support for the cause.

“In total, we have been able to raise more than £23,000 which will be donated to the Evening Standard Dispossessed Fund: Grenfell Tower Fire.

“Thank you to everyone for their generosity.”
