Richmond has been named as one of the best places to shop in Britain.

Retail property advisors Harper Dennis Hobbs’ annual vitality index analysed 1,000 centres across Britain.

Cambridge came top of the rankings, climbing six places compared to last year. Richmond was inside the top 10 in seventh.

The index included areas with more than 40 shops – including high streets, malls and town centres – but excluded retail parks and outlet centres.

It looked at the combination of ‘up-market’ shops, value-led shops, vacancy rate and the proportion of ‘undesirable’ shops such as pawnbrokers and money lenders.

Richmond BID's chairman, Erick Kervaon, said: "It's an honour to be included in retail experts Harper Dennis Hobbs' top 10. The fact
we've been named amongst some of the biggest shopping districts in the country is testament to the quality offer we have here.

"Now that BeRichmond has launched, we shall be working hard to make a great town even greater, and make sure we are one of the UK's most desirable destinations to live, work and explore."

Richmond Chamber of Commerce CEO Anne Newton said: "I’m so glad. Richmond retailers are really amongst the best. These figures confirm that and we will continue to support our local shops.”

The Harper Dennis Hobbs report read: “The thriving centres are all relatively affluent, and have a retail offer that is suitable for the local consumer, generally with an offer of convenience oriented supermarkets, bars and restaurants which are complemented by high proportions of up-market retailers.

Ms Newton added: “Richmond truly has everything going for it. And the people living here know that. We will continue living and shopping in Richmond upon Thames.

“There is a fascinating cross section of retailers to enjoy. The superb attractions and beautiful parks and views including the river Thames adds to the retail experience here.”

Wimbledon Village finished in sixth place while Kingston was included in 18th with Cobham in 19th.
