Richmond has been crowned the best borough to raise a family in the capital, with Kingston close behind.

City travel blog London Unlocked ranked each borough on five family-friendly elements to help families when moving locations.

When totalling the scores for local crime rates, GCSE results, number of schools per 10,000 population, green space and child obesity percentage, Richmond topped the charts with Kingston coming second.

Laura Davis, 36, from East Twickenham, with a 11-month and five-year-old said: “We have lived and worked in the area for 10 years now and it just has everything you really need from the parks and green space to the shops and restaurants – it’s just great really.

“My older son is at Deer Park School and that really is fantastic and he really loves it and my youngest goes to nursery in North Sheen which is also fantastic.”

Richmond scored in the top 10 for each category – topping the league table for the highest percentage of children achieving five or more A* - C grades at GCSEs and lowest percentage of reported childhood obesity.

Jane Fitch, 46, from Sheen Park, with an 11, 13 and 15-year-old said: “They are all very happy at their schools and they have all stayed in Richmond– they all went to Marshgate Primary school and now my two sons are at Christ high school – where they are very happy."

The borough also came in the top five for low crime levels, number of schools per head and the percentage of borough that is green and open space.

Paul Fraser, from Kew, with a 20-month year old, said: “It is such a safe area – to the point that I think the only crime would be something like some old lady killing another old lady over a cucumber.

“Ultimately apart from being safe there are plenty of amenities and playground – we are just off to the playground at the Church on Duke Street which is amazing quality and really clean.”

With Richmond being less than half-an-hour away from central London and also easy access to the river, families feel like they have the best of both worlds.

Joanne Lunn, from Twickenham, with a two-year-old and another on the way, said: “I have lived in Twickenham for seven years and I really like it.

“We work in London but being out here you still have the river, park, library – which does this great story time and singing session for the children.”

Kingston also showed family-friendly results, scoring in the top five for low crime rates and GCSE grades and in the top 10 for low obesity levels and green space.

Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Schools, Cllr Paul Hodgins, said: “We have the best primary schools in the country, high performing secondary schools, the fittest and healthiest young people and many award-winning parks and open spaces.

“We are not complacent. We do listen to our residents and invest funding in those areas that help make our borough great.”
