An inspiring Second World War survivor received a card from the Queen and a surprise visit from the Mayor as she celebrated her 100th birthday this week.

Molly Pearce, who lives in Hampton, was surrounded by family, friends and neighbours as she marked her centenary in style on May 15.

Originally from Twickenham, Ms Pearce has lived in the borough all her life and even remembers cycling from Twickenham to Richmond over the bridge praying that it wouldn’t be bombed on her way to work.

Roberta, the centenarian’s daughter, said: “The secret to my mother’s long life is simple - she has always lived a clean, active life with a great sense of humour.

“If it were a nicer day, she would definitely be in the garden now! Her age doesn’t show at all, you wouldn’t know she is 100.”

Born in 1917 the Second World War survivor first attended Trafalgar school, Gothic Road, before she started work at 14 and continued on to have many different jobs in the borough.

Cllr David Linnette, Mayor of Richmond said: “What a fantastic lady. Molly is an example to us all! She is looked after by her daughter but she still enjoys doing her own gardening and helping around the house.

“It’s wonderful to hear of someone remaining so active at such an age and it’s an honour to celebrate with Molly on her 100th birthday.”
