Ranelagh Harriers' Marie Synnott-Wells won the Harry Hawkes eight miles road race in Thames Ditton on Sunday.

Defying strong winds and heavy showers, Marie's strength prevailed in the closing stages as she crossed the line in 52.09, just 11 seconds clear of runner-up Angela Evans of London Heathside.

With Mandy Westlake seventh, Evelyn Joslin 15th and Karen Broadbent 22nd, Ranelagh took second place in the women's team event.

In the men's race Jonathon Stacey finished 10th in 46.11. Peter Weir was 16th in 48.05 and the fourth Over 40, while Iain Wilson was second Over 50 (31st overall in 50.52) and Pete Warren second Over 60 (91st overall in 59.06). The Ranelagh men's team of Stacey, Weir, Trevor Maguire (20th in 48.40) and Niall O'Connor (25th in 50.08) took third place.

Ranelagh Harriers' outstanding junior Sam Perkins finished eighth in the 5,000 metres at the England Athletics U20s championships at Bedford last weekend. Sam was only half a minute behind the winner in 15 mins 25 secs.
