In a scene which would have been an appropriate inclusion in David Attenborough’s Planet Earth II, a seal with an “enormous fish” in its mouth was spotted swimming in the Thames near St Margarets this morning.

Fiona Grainger, from St Margarets, who noticed the seal in the river while on a morning jog shortly before 10.30am, said a crowd had gathered to watch the animal.

Ms Grainger, 39, said: “I had been on a run and there was a bit of a commotion – seagulls were flying overhead and people were looking at it.

“The seal was just in the middle of the river bobbing around, eating this enormous fish.

“It’s very rare – I have never heard of this before.

“It was there for about five minutes and then swam off again.”

Two weeks ago a swan caused travel chaos when it sat on the train line between Kingston and Hampton Wick - delaying commuters for about an hour until South West Trains staff removed it.
