Hounslow & District Wheelers' Paul Holdsworth clocked a personal best time to finish second in the Burton & District Cycling Association 100-mile time trial on Saturday.

His time of three hours 41 minutes 39 seconds was nine minutes behind the winner, Kevin Dawson of Pinarello RT.

Holdsworth's achievement is remarkable considering the strength of the field, in which there were 91 finishers, with the fastest 10 containing six of the top 12 in the 2006 British Best All Rounder.

Dawson, last year's BBAR champion, who holds the competition record over this distance (3:22.45), has dominated long distance time trialling for more than a decade and still appears to be at the height of his powers.

After the enforced rest caused by an early-season accident, Holdsworth seems to be near the top of his form, but there is no reason to think he is not still on the upward side of the curve.

"I felt good in the last few miles; maybe I was too cautious early on," he said.

With a good 100 in the bag for his 2007 BBAR campaign, he can now concentrate on the other distances, by looking for a fast 50 and building up to the 12-hour. His time was also a club veterans' record.

The course was based on Etwall, just north of Burton on Trent, Derbyshire.

Result: 1 Kevin Dawson (Pinarello RT) 3:32.18; 2 Paul Holdsworth (Hounslow) 3:41.39; 3 Oliver Jones (API Metrow) 3:41.55; 4 Nik Bowdler (Farnborough & Camberley CC) 3:44.05; 5 Carl Ruebotham (Team Swift) 3:45.10; 6 Ken Platts (Cambridge CC) 3:46.07.
