Bob Geldof was on the Liberal Democrat campaign trail yesterday, publically backing Sarah Olney – but he was challenged by one passer-by who said he “knew nothing” about Heathrow expansion.
Before hitting the streets with Ms Olney the musician recorded a video in which he branded independent candidate Zac Goldsmith a “political failure”.
He said: “(Mr Goldsmith) not only failed but betrayed the people of Richmond who, like the rest of London, voted overwhelmingly to stay in Europe.
"How can Goldsmith represent the opinion of the people of Richmond in Parliament when he is the poster-boy for the Brexiteers and is urging the government daily on its catastrophic course?
"The fightback can begin in Richmond tomorrow. Zac has to go."
Mr Goldsmith responded by saying he didn’t think voters would be swayed by “shouty celebrities who have no stake in our community.”
One passer-by grilled Geldof, arguing that Mr Goldsmith is the only candidate who understands the arguments against Heathrow expansion.

He said: “Think about it – he’s the best MP in the country. He’s standing against Heathrow expansion.
“Bob Geldof, you don’t understand the facts about Heathrow.”
Mr Goldsmith said: “Richmond and Kingston voters are choosing their next MP – someone to fight for them.
“People know I have been a good and effective MP, which is why they gave me the biggest increased majority of any MP in the country just over a year ago. And they know I keep my word.
“That’s not something the Lib Dems or their backers attach much importance to, but it matters to everyone else.”
