Residents are being asked for their views on controversial plans to build elderly care facilities on playing grounds in Teddington.

Udney Park is used by a variety of sports teams and the plans propose building care homes and assisted living facilities on the green area.

According to the proposals, approximately 66 per cent of the land by Udney Park Road will remain grassland for sports, while the remaining 34 per cent will be for retirement living.

Opponents to the plan say they want to keep the entire grassy area, which had belonged to the Imperial College London, for sports use.

Gareth Bullock, from Friends of Udney Park, said: "Our view is that it's like taking someone's dinner away, giving them half of it back, and asking them to be grateful.

"It's 13 acres of the best playing fields in the borough that has a shortage of playing fields.

"It is not a nimby thing - we know we are not on the Lake District. We feel all of it should be used for sports."

A public consultation is set to be held by the developer Quantum Group to ask locals for their opinions on the development.

The consultation will be held at The Clubhouse at the former ICL ground from December 8 from 11am to 4.45pm, December 9 from 2pm to 8pm, and December 10 from 10am to 2pm.
