A new Marks & Spencer food hall is to open in Barnes.

The supermarket chain announced the opening of the food hall, to be based in the High Street, this morning.

The move comes amid news that about 30 M&S stores would be closed - with 45 of the 60 stores planned to close in the next five years downgraded to the successful food halls.

The announcement came after a plunge in profits for the retailer as it reported an 88.4 per cent fall in pre-tax proft from £216m to £25.1m in the six months to the end of September.

The food hall, which is expected to bring 35 jobs to the area, will stock everyday essentials, delicatessen foods, spirits and wines and a barista bakery.

The official opening will be at 10am on November 30 - with opening hours listed from 8am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday and 11am to 5pm on Sunday.
