A mushroom 'as big as a football' has been spotted sticking out of a pavement in Kew.

The mushroom, which is of unknown origin, is so big that when a car is parked next to it it is impossible to open the door.

RTT reporter George Odling said: “I parked the car and found I couldn’t open the door because something was blocking it.

“I had to clamber through the car to get out the other side, then saw this enormous mushroom growing out of the pavement that was solid enough to block the car door.

“It was bigger than a football.”

The mushroom was spotted on Kew Green, opposite The Botanist pub. It also appears as though it may have been set on fire.

Vegetarian journalist Rebecca Taylor said it was the biggest mushroom she had ever seen.

She added: "And I eat massive portobello mushrooms all the time."
