Castelnau Library in Barnes celebrated its 50th birthday this month as organisers held a series of events to mark half a century of serving the community.

The library will play host to a number of celebratory events, including coffee mornings, a children’s story time with author Karen Inglis, a Geraldine Moffat reading and an official birthday cake cutting with Doctor Zhivago actress and Barnes resident Rita Tushingham.

Throughout July old photos from the library and local area are on display, as well as a collection of written memories of the library.

Tickets to Barnes’ London Wetland Centre will also be up for grabs in a golden anniversary prize draw.

A family treasure trail walk and a Roald Dahl day will take place on Saturday, July 23 and Tuesday, July 26, respectively.

Richmond borough mayor, Councillor David Linnette said Castelnau library was ‘cherished’, and he hoped it would last another 50 years.

Cllr Linnette said: “Long may it flourish and continue to be a source of knowledge, entertainment and engagement for all ages.

“Libraries play a vital role in communities across Richmond, from helping young people to read and learn, and as community hub bringing people of all ages together.”
