Fears of a 'massive explosion' sparked by smoke coming from a light bollard meant Teddington High Street was closed for around an hour today.

London Fire Brigade responded at 13.17pm to reportes of smoke coming from a low-voltage light bollard opposite the top of Cambridge Road.

The fire was attributed to an electrical fault.

Police officers closed the High Street for 'about an hour' before re-opening it.

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

Massimo Mangella, who works at Shambles restaurant on the High Street, said police officers had closed the road because of a small fire in a low-voltage electrical bollard.

Mr Mangella said: "They closed the road for about an hour because they were worried about a fire from an electrical bollard.

"They said they were worried it could cause a 'massive explosion'.

"I said that I didn't know how there could be a massive explosion because it's just one of those low-voltage electrical bollard.

"They wouldn't let people even walk past - customers couldn't get to the restaurant."

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said the road was re-opened shortly after 2pm.
