A pet chinchilla which disappeared through a hole behind a toilet was rescued from its hiding place in a kitchen cupboard by a team of plumbers.

Sooty the chinchilla, aged one, made a dash for freedom through the nook behind the toilet of the home in Gloucester Road, Richmond, on May 10.

After an extensive search of the home, Justine Panay decided to call engineers from Dyno to help find the pet, which belongs to her son, Tom.

Engineer Jordan Baker helped look behind the toilet, microwave and dishwasher and was about to give up hope Sooty would ever be found, before he suggested a further check in the kitchen wall using specialist CCTV equipment.

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

Sooty was found holed up behind the kitchen cabinets and, after an hour and a half of coaxing, was brought back to safety.

Speaking after the successful rescue, Ms Panay, said: “I can’t say enough about Jordan, he was amazing.

“Tom’s in the middle of his GSCEs and loosing Sooty would have been devastating.”

Mr Baker said: “It might not be in the training manual, but we’re always ready for anything.”
