Riverside Café in Barnes, Sheen Tandoori in Upper Richmond Road and Twickenham’s The Sussex Arms all scored a zero out of five hygiene rating following their latest visit from inspectors.

UPDATE: Award-winning pub The Sussex Arms given improved hygiene rating following re-inspection

A fourth restaurant, Moidul’s in Stanley Road, Teddington, also scored a zero when it was inspected in May 2015. A representative for the company that runs the restaurant said the branch closed shortly after this.

The ratings, issued by Richmond Council hygiene officers, take into account factors such as the handling of food and the condition of the building.

The Sussex Arms, a winner of the Campaign for Real Ale’s pub of the year from 2012-14, was last inspected on May 19, 2015, and owner James Morgan said all issues were immediately rectified and the pub has been waiting for a re-inspection since.

Mr Morgan said: “At the time we had just gone through a complete kitchen overhaul and management change. There were some issues with things like storage.”

He added: “We have been waiting for the last couple of months for the council to do a re-inspection.

“As soon as they come back the rating will be much higher.

“Since the last one we have changed management and spent more than £12,000 in the kitchen. Our hands are tied at the moment.

“It is up to them to come back and re-inspect.”

The Riverside Café, in Castelnau, was inspected on September 21, 2015 and told “urgent improvement was necessary.”

The Food Standard Agency’s website states businesses with zero ratings are usually “performing poorly in all three”criteria they are assessed against.

The Riverside Café and Sheen Tandoori, which is in Upper Richmond Road and was inspected on January 29, 2016, were both contacted by this newspaper to find out why they received a zero.

A member of staff at the Riverside Cafe said his “boss was not there” and he was “very busy.”

Sheen Tandoori was unavailable to comment.
