A primary school will be based at the Ryde House site in east Twickenham as part of a joint development with supermarket giants Lidl.

Deer Park School, currently located on a temporary site at Richmond Adult Community College, will move to the Upper Richmond Road development in September 2018.

The two-form school will be based above the German supermarket chain, with playground space at the rear and an underground car park for the shop’s customers.

The school is maintained by charity Bellevue and Place Education Trust, which has been in lengthy negotiations with Lidl and the Education Funding Agency (EFA) over the site.

Chairman Claire Delaney said: “We are delighted to announce to parents and the local community that we can follow through on our original promise to offer new high-quality primary school places where they are most needed – in the east Twickenham and St Margarets area of Richmond.

“We do hope that parents who were anticipating the school to be at London House will continue to consider Deer Park School as their school of choice.”

The school currently has just 14 pupils but will be able to cater for up to 60 children when it opens in September.

It was originally planned to move permanently to London House, a disused office block on the A316, which prompted opposition from parents.

Richmond Council cabinet member for education Councillor Paul Hodgins said: “Finding a site for a new school in East Twickenham and St Margaret's has been our single biggest challenge in implementing our school place planning strategy.

“As for most new schools now across London, this site has its challenges.

“We always agreed that London House wasn’t an ideal location – I am sure that residents around that site will be pleased.”

Deer Park School hopes to submit outline planning by the end of March.

Parent Sally Prickett, who has been campaigning for a new school for east Twickenham, said: “We are delighted that Deer Park School has announced today that it will be moving to its permanent buildings at Ryde House.

“The community desperately needs a primary school and it is wonderful that our children will now have the excellent Deer Park School in our area."

Prospective parents can meet the school on March 1 at 5pm to learn about the move and understand how to amend their preferences before National Offer Day.

Councillor Alexander Ehmann, deputy leader of the Lib Dems in Richmond, said former Twickenham MP Vince Cable should be recognised for his role in the deal.

He said: “Without our ex-MP Sir Vince Cable's intervention the Conservative council would have slept right through this opportunity. “Thankfully, the Liberal Democrats got this on the table with the developers."
