Twickenham MP Tania Mathias is "disappointed" that Richmond Council has had its Government grant slashed by 48 per cent.

EARLIER: Prime Minister's extra money for council claims "simply not true", says deputy leader, as council tax set to rise

LAST WEEK: Councils' spending power "going up, not down", says David Cameron

The council announced its funding from central Government had been almost halved, in the same week David Cameron said its spending power had "gone up".

The Prime Minister told the Richmond and Twickenham Times last week that the council is actually receiving "extra money", despite the £11.4m cut in funding.

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

Prime Minister David Cameron said the council has received "extra money"

But Dr Mathias said: "I am disappointed with the proposed Government grant for our council.

"I have asked the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government to meet with me and council leaders after I urged the Minister in Parliament to support efficient councils like Richmond who endeavour to provide excellent services with prudent financial management.

"It is particularly disappointing in the week that the Prime Minister came to the council offices in Twickenham to hear about the excellent social services for children and families."

The council has admitted it will have to increase fees and charges, as well as increasing council tax, to make up for the huge loss.

London mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith says he will continue to "work closely" with the council

Richmond Park MP and Mayor of London candidate Zac Goldsmith added: "Richmond has always been one of the lowest funded boroughs in London and like all boroughs it has had to make considerable savings in recent years.

"It has done so extremely effectively and I will work closely with the council to ensure it continues to do so."
