The decision over whether high-octane monster truck stunts should be held at Twickenham Stadium was put on hold as Richmond’s planning committee members ruled they needed more information before approving proposals.

MONDAY: Monster trucks at Twickenham stadium could get the go-ahead at council planning meeting

Council officers recommended proposals for the home of rugby to play host to a Monster Jam event next summer, but the planning committee voted to defer the decision to a later date in order for more evidence of the environmental and noise impacts to be presented.

The plans, submitted by the RFU, would allow American live show production company Field Entertainment to host the Monster Jam event.

Councillor Rita Palmer expressed her disappointment there were no members of the RFU or the Monster Jam management team present at Wednesday’s meeting to answer the committee’s questions.

Stephen Riley, who lives in Popes Grove near the stadium, said he never had a problem with the usual sporting events and concerts held at the ground but had a problem with these proposals.

He said: “It is not like a normal sporting event. They will need 200 trucks coming in and then 200 trucks going.

“It’s not like a concert audience, it will be a load of petrol heads in 4x4s coming to Twickenham.

“I just cannot believe that they have even come up with this scheme.”

Councillor Brian Marcel said he was most satisfied with the idea of hosting the motorsport event, which he said had an enormous following all over the world.

He said: “There are countless examples of where it has been successful and where it hasn’t been.

“I think the officers know what they are doing [in recommending the proposal for approval] and I am satisfied.”

The committee voted to defer the decision by seven votes to two.
