Anti-expansion campaigners stepped up demonstrations against a third runway at Heathrow this week, with protests at Terminal Two and at Richmond Bridge.
More than 50 campaigners stood in front of the terminal’s giant sculpture on Saturday and revealed T-shirts emblazoned with the words “No 3rd Runway.”
Activists from the Green Party, Teddington Action Group, Airport Watch, Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth strung up a banner declaring “No New Runways” at Richmond Bridge on Saturday, November 15.
Green Party’s Andree Frieze highlighted a promise made by David Cameron in 2010 that the airport would not be expanded, and said: “I’ve spoken to many people here today, and they think the Government is making a huge mistake if it goes back on this promise.
“The increased noise and air pollution a new runway would bring will have a disproportionate impact on residents in the area.”
The government has said it will deliver a formal response to the Davies Commission recommendation, which recommended Heathrow for expansion over Gatwick in July, by Christmas.
