Fire crews tackled a blaze above a shop and flats in Whitton’s High Street this afternoon.

A spokesman from the London Fire Brigade said 35 firefighters and officers tackled the blaze, and eight people left the shop before their arrival.

Station manager Dave Farr, who was at the scene, said: “The shop had flats above it and quick thinking crews spread plastic sheeting in the flats to minimise water damage while the roof fire was brought under control.”

Part of the roof and some solar panels were damaged in the fire.

The fire brigade was called at 12.24pm and the fire was under control at 1.38pm.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
