A man who smashed a glass in a woman's face and left her with permanent scarring on a night out in Richmond has been jailed for five years.

Matthew Davies, 45, attacked the 26-year-old woman with a glass when she spurned his advances at Revolution bar on Richmond riverside on November 30, 2013.

Davies, who lives in Ravenswood Road, Balham, approached her on the bar's dance floor and tried to chat her up before he threw his drink at her face.

The glass shattered on the floor, catching the attention of the door staff who intervened and detained Davies until police arrived and arrested him.

The victim was taken to hospital to be treated for her injuries and has been left with permanent scarring to her cheek and above her lip.

When interviewed by police, Davies told officers he could not remember the attack clearly and claimed he never intended to injure the woman.

Detective Constable Paul Carlson, from Richmond CID, said: "Davies told police he had been drinking from about midday and said his memory was hazy before and after the incident in Revolution.

"This has been a very traumatic experience for the victim who had gone out for a night with friends to enjoy herself.

"She has been now left with permanent injuries to her face.

"Although Davies told police he had minimal recollection of events this sentence reflects the seriousness of the offence.

"The victim has been through a lot of trauma and hopefully now can move on with her life."

He was found guilty of grievous bodily harm by a jury at Kingston Crown Court on June 23.

It is not the first time a serious crime has occurred at the riverside bar. Consistent bad behaviour from late night troublemakers forced its closure in September 2013, prompting a review of its licensed opening hours.
