The development of Twickenham Riverside will be put to residents later in 2015 - but an open air swimming pool will not form part of the plans.

Twickenham Alive put forward proposals for a lido on the riverside, next to the Diamond Jubilee Gardens, after architects were invited to submit bids for the development.

But its plans were knocked back by the council and now council leader Lord True said public consultations on the chosen scheme would commence later this year.

He said: "When we have identified ideas which fit the brief as much as possible, we will put it to public consultation.

"That will come later this year and my expectation is that it will be just one proposal put to the public.

"I can assure you that what will come forward will be, I hope, excellent and will certainly be a lot better than what we have there on the site now, the ugly Santander building and a largely disused car park.

"It will be something that will be an asset to people in Twickenham."

Since seeing its plans for a lido on the site, close to the former Twickenham Lido which is now the Diamond Jubilee Gardens, Twickenham Alive has created a twickenhamlido.com website.

Lord True said, while he did not want to comment on a particular scheme, the plans were now "off the table".

He said: "I don't want to get into a row with Teresa Read [of Twickenham Alive] but she is obviously upset that her idea hasn't been chosen and that is tough.

"Twickenham Alive have had great ideas for Twickenham and will go on having great ideas and being active within the community."

The council completed its purchase of the site in King Street and Water Lane in October last year and invited architects to put forward bids to develop the riverside.

Bidders were given a brief outlining the council's vision for the site, including a town square in King Street, 'niche' restaurants and shops, council offices and a proportion of residential development.

It is believed architect Quinlan Terry, who designed Richmond Riverside, has submitted a proposal as well as one other unnamed architect.
