Richmond's new mayor will enjoy plenty of celebrations as the borough celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Councillor Martin Seymour was named as the 51st mayor of the borough on Friday and will take over from current mayor Councillor Jane Boulton following formal nomination at the next full council meeting in May.

Coun Seymour, who was first elected to Hampton North ward in 2006 and re-elected in 2014, has chosen The Mulberry Centre and the Alzheimer's Society as his chosen charities throughout his tenure as mayor.

Coun Seymour, who is the council's current tenants champion and vice chairman of the planning committee, said it would be a privilege to take over from Coun Boulton during the Rugby World Cup year.

He said: "I have made my home in this area for over a quarter of a century and truly feel blessed to live here.

"I look forward to helping the various charities and voluntary organisations raise their profile and raise funds."

The new tenants champion and vice chairman of planning will be announced shortly.
